Durham Cathedral
Client Brief - To design a lighting solution for Prior's Hall to allow this multifunctional meeting room to offer a comfortable yet decorative area for conferences, meetings and lectures. Creating a warm yet bright ambience by highlighting the ceiling and the 18th century oriental wallpaper hangings.
The original lighting scheme consisted of a single brass chandelier and four floor-standing fittings, and gave insufficient light to work in or illuminate the wall decoration. As Durham Cathedral is Grade I listed, the challenge was to create a solution without having to run cabling into the wall.
Working in close collaboration with Cathedral architect Christopher Downs, the existing chandelier was refurbished to include a globe which directed light at the wallhangings. This design was duplicated to produce an additional four chandeliers in order to satisfy the client brief.
